The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) is the leading European organisation in its field/area. It developed structural and personal criteria which allow integrating palliative medicine into the care for cancer patients all over the world. These standards guarantee a high level of quality in the treatment, and they have to be reviewed every three years.
ESMO offers post-graduate education and training in clinical cancer care and research, and produces evidence-based recommendations for basic standards of cancer care. While the majority of ESMO's 13,000 members are medical oncologists, actual membership spans over 130 countries and also includes radiation and surgical oncologists, as well as other oncology healthcare professionals actively involved in cancer treatment, research, and patient care.
The ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) are intended to provide oncology professionals with a set of recommendations for the best standards of cancer care, based on the findings of evidence-based medicine.
